A Beginner’s Guide to Reusable Menstrual Cups

A Beginner’s Guide to Reusable Menstrual Cups

What a menstrual cup is

A menstrual cup is a reusable internal period product designed to collect menstrual fluid. Cups are commonly made from flexible silicone, but the exact material grade, capacity and dimensions vary by product. Always check the information supplied with your specific cup.

Learning to use a cup can take time. It is normal for the first few attempts to feel unfamiliar, and there is no need to rush.

Choose the correct size

Size names such as Small and Large are not standardized across brands. Use the manufacturer chart, including capacity, diameter and length, rather than relying on the name alone. Age, childbirth history and flow may be included in brand guidance, but comfort and anatomy also vary.

If you use an intrauterine device, have pelvic health concerns or are unsure whether a cup is suitable for you, ask a qualified healthcare professional before use.

Prepare carefully

Wash your hands and clean or sterilize the cup exactly as directed before first use. Inspect it for damage. Try learning at a time when you are not in a hurry, and consider using water-based lubricant if the manufacturer permits it.

Fold the cup using one of the methods described in the product instructions, then insert it gently. Pain is a signal to stop, relax and try again later rather than forcing the process.

Removal and emptying

Wash your hands before removal. Relax the pelvic muscles, reach the base of the cup and release the seal according to the instructions. Do not pull forcefully on the stem alone. Empty the contents, rinse or clean the cup as directed and reinsert only when it is clean and undamaged.

Follow the brand’s maximum wear time. Never assume that guidance for another cup applies to yours.

Cleaning, storage and safety

At the end of the cycle, clean or sterilize the cup according to the instructions and let it dry fully before storing it in a breathable container. Replace it if it becomes damaged, develops an unusual surface or can no longer be cleaned properly.

Stop use and seek medical advice if you experience severe pain, fever, unusual discharge, dizziness, rash or other concerning symptoms. Menstrual cup use should always be guided by the verified instructions and safety information for the exact product.
